Community Language Planning

“The Assembly Government is clear about the crucial importance of maintaining Welsh as a living community language if the language is to thrive and flourish.” (Iaith Pawb, 2003)

IAITH: welsh centre for language planning agrees wholeheartedly with the above statement and helping others to maintain and develop the viability of Welsh language communities is a key part of the company's vision.

We have over the years developed, administered and managed numerous community projects and resources, and continue to do so with a number of partners. Many of the projects that were hatched at the IAITH offices continue to develop. Some continue as IAITH projects while others have been adopted by statutory bodies and have flown the nest.

The following list offers an overview of the diverse and wide ranging nature of the community projects that are either still being offered by the company, or were at one stage part of the company's portfolio of services.

A planning and development service for mentrau iaith and others
Providing training on language and culture issues in connection with community development
Developing innovative projects in collaboration with partners in the community
Providing training on the Welsh language in business
Conducting training sessions on the significance of the Welsh language for the tourism industry
Contributing towards Y Ffwrwm's activities
Developing the Ogam scheme on behalf of Menter Iaith Sir Benfro and arranging a major conference discussing Sustainability and the Welsh Language.

Fan Hyn, Fan draw
Providing services and information, and promoting cultural opportunities within some of Ceredigion's most rural areas are some of the main aims of the Local Service Board's innovative scheme, 'Fan Hyn, Fan Draw' with the Library Van as a focal point. As part of this new project, a broadband connection has been installed in Llangeitho's Jubilee Hall; Devil's Bridge Chapel; Neuadd Pantyfedwen, Pontrhydfendigaid, and Ysbyty Ystwyth Hall. During the library van visits, a number of lap-top computers are set up in the halls and are available for the use of members of the public.

The Library Van also acts as a link between the public and many agencies by working in partnership with Dyfed-Powys Police, Ceredigion Dysgu Bro, the Fire and Rescue Service, and CAVO.

The project is administered by IAITH and Ceredigion County Council's Education and Community Services Department on behalf of the Ceredigion Local Service Board.

7/iaith
The aim of this project is to strengthen and expand the use we make of the Welsh language within our communities, in the context of 7 specific themes. There are things we can all do in order to work towards this aim, and a key element within the project is the empowerment of Welsh speakers in the context of these 7 themes.

Cymraeg yn Gyntaf / Welsh – Give it a Go
'Cymraeg yn Gyntaf' started out as a project developed by IAITH for Cered in the 1990s. The main purpose of this campaign is to urge people to use Welsh first in all aspects of their lives. By now, under the management of the Welsh Language Board, the emphasis of the campaign is on the private sector – shops and businesses of all kinds. The campaign also urges service providers to make greater use of the Welsh language.

Work Experience Project
The Work Experience project aims to enhance and linguistically enrich the experiences gained by pupils on Work Experience placements, with an emphasis upon Welsh learners and speakers with low confidence or fluency from Ysgol Gyfun Ddwyieithog Dyffryn Teifi and Ysgol Gyfun Llanbedr Pont Steffan / Lampeter Comprehensive School. This is achieved by working with pupils, teachers and employers, and emphasising the significance and importance being able to use the Welsh language in the workplace.

Community Development
Iaith, in partnership with Menter a Busnes, a member of the Communities First Support Network, have produced a number of resources for Communities First Partnerships in order to enable them to make greater use of the Welsh language locally, and to be able to use the Welsh language in order to acheive Communities First objectives. Copies of the resources are available here.

In addition, our Estyn Llaw scheme provides support and guidance for a number of voluntary groups and organisations, particularly in West and Mid Wales.
