Meeting in Aberystwyth, Llanelli and Dyffryn Conwy they discussed the latest developments and tried to anticipate what lies over the horizon for language planning in Wales. This paper summarises the discussions that were held.

Announcing a Statement of Intent between the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and IAITH: the Welsh centre for language planning

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David stall, National Eisteddfod at Ebbw Vale

CAIACh, the Centre for Language, Education and Community Studies, will be a partnership between the University's School of Welsh and Bilingual Studies and IAITH: the Welsh centre for language planning.

The Centre will aim to build on both partner's strengths and experiences to create a new specialist service to provide for the education and training needs for language planning in Wales.

'Language Legislation - too important to be left to the lawyers'

The lecturer, Emyr Lewis, is a lawyer renowned for his expertise in language issues. Emyr has been notably vocal during the proposed new Welsh Language Bill's public consultation period. As a member of the Council of Europe's Committee of Experts on language issues his opinions carry some weight.

Contracts, Grants and Bilingualism

What are the expectations faced by 3rd sector organisations in terms of offering services bilingually after winning contracts or securing grant funding?
Is there any support available in order to assist organisations to meet these requirements?

Join Estyn Llaw for a workshop that will consider these issues, with contributions from representatives from the Welsh Language Board and the Big Lottery Fund. There will also be an opportunity to discuss recent developments including the 3rd Sector Compact, and the Code of Practise for Funding the 3rd Sector.

LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN THE EARLY YEARS

Basic Skills Cymru in partnership with Twf and Bookstart will be holding a series of seminars, free of charge, on the importance of introducing rhymes and stories to children from birth and up to 3 years old during March 2010.

The keynote speaker of the day will be Professor Roger Beard, Professor of Primary Education and Head of the School of Early Childhood and Primary Education at the Institute of Education of the University of London. He has recently published research on the theme of the seminar.

Workshops offering specialist rhymetime training by Bookstart and Twf will also be offered as part of the day's programme.


Breakfast with the Minister

The Breakfast with the Minister event provided food for thought as well as tasty pastries! The event, organised under the banner of Language Planners Wales, was well attended by a wide range of delegates to discuss the 'Bilingual Wales' consultation in the company of Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones AM, and Huw Onllwyn Jones, Head of the Welsh Language Unit at WAG. A lively and open discussion engendered interesting and challenging points.

Language Planners Wales' Annual Lecture


Professor Colin H Williams was the guest speaker at Language Planners Wales' annual lecture held at the National Eisteddfod in Bala (2009). Colin mapped out a number of options that currently face language planners in Wales in terms of legislation, regulation and promotion. He drew on some international examples as well as providing an analysis of our current issues.
