“We see family language transfer as a key element of our language strategy ”. (Iaith Pawb, 2003)

So said the Welsh Assembly Government's statement when setting its vision of creating a bilingual Wales. The Twf scheme is charged with realising the above aim.

Since 2001 IAITH has been the Twf agent on behalf of the Welsh Language Board. The scheme works mainly with midwives, health visitors and others in the health service in order to communicate Twf's message to prospective parents and new families – particularly those families where only one parent speaks Welsh.

And the message? Simply, the importance of using the Welsh language within the family from the very beginning. Ensuring that the Welsh language is spoken at home gives children the best opportunity of becoming naturally bilingual.

Further information about the scheme can be found on the website below.
