Language Policy and Research

IAITH's Language Policy and Research Unit is led by Dr Kathryn Jones. Kathryn has worked in a number of international contexts before joining Cwmni Iaith in 1999. Under her guidance, the company has fulfilled a number of significant research projects for public bodies and academic institutions in Wales and other UK countries.
A wide range of work is undertaken – from purely academic research projects to applied research initiatives and evaluative exercises in the public domain along with participatory research projects in collaboration with community groups. We are familiar with qualitative and quantitative research methods and we specialise in implementing an ethnographic methodology.
The company's recent research projects include:
• Background research on opportunities for Welsh language legislation and implementing language policies – on behalf of Hywel Williams MP (November 2007)
Creating a truly bilingual Wales: Opportunities for legislating and implementing policy (2007)
• Language Skills Study:a study of the means that language skills issues are dealt with by human resource managers within the public sector in Wales – on behalf of the Welsh Language Board (August 2006)
• A study of the socialisation of language within families in Wales, in collaboration with the School of Social Policy at the University College of Wales Bangor – funded by the ESRC (May 2006)
• Positioning paper on the implementation of ELWa's Welsh Language Scheme – on behalf of ELWa (March 2006)
